As part of its role in ensuring global health security the World Health Organization (WHO) must be able to define, detect and respond to the threat of infectious diseases including mortality and morbidity, disability, epidemics, emerging diseases and drug resistance. WHO's Communicable Disease Cluster has developed a global partnership called the Global Atlas of Infectious Diseases. This innovative, web-based system brings together a broad range of information providers in a joint project designed to service the growing infectious disease data needs of the global and national communities.

The Global Atlas presents maps, tables and charts of different diseases at global, country, district and even community level. Disease data can be linked to a broad range of indicators on poverty, economics, education and health services to provide a more comprehensive picture of the situation at different levels. The Global Atlas database currently contains over 300 indicators on over 20 infectious diseases.
